Choosing the Right Ileostomy Surgeon

August 26, 2017  ·  By: Dr. Don Schiller

An ileostomy is a major procedure that changes your life significantly. In order to ensure that you have the best quality of life following the procedure, you need to choose a qualified, experienced ileostomy surgeon. Below are some things to consider as you compare different surgeons.

1. The surgeon’s reputation.

Perhaps one of the most important considerations when comparing ileostomy surgeons is the surgeon’s reputation. To learn about your surgeon’s reputation, read testimonials and reviews from past patients. Look for a surgeon with a strong record of success and patient satisfaction.

2. The surgeon’s credentials.

Before choosing any ileostomy surgeon to perform your procedure, make sure you ask to see proof of the surgeon’s credentials. Ask the surgeon if he or she is a member of any professional organizations, and be sure to inquire about areas of specialty.

3. The procedures available.

Not all surgeons offer the same ileostomy options. Because each of these options works differently and offers different advantages, it is important to make sure that the surgeon you choose offers the option you need. Options available include the J-pouch, Barnett Continent Intestinal Reservoir and conventional ileostomy.

4. The hospital stay.

Different surgeons require you to remain in the hospital for differing amounts of time following an ileostomy procedure. For example, while most surgeons require a hospital stay of three weeks after this procedure, most of Dr. Schilling’s patients are discharged after approximately two weeks.

5. The aftercare.

Another important consideration when comparing different ileostomy surgeons is the quality of aftercare provided. Be sure to ask your surgeon if he or she will be overseeing your care personally while you are in the hospital, or if your care will be delegated to another staff member. If you are considering a surgeon located far from your home, ask about the availability of telephone-based follow-up appointments.

Dr. Don Schiller is an experienced ileostomy specialist who has a strong reputation for success and high patient satisfaction levels. He offers one of the shortest hospital stays and most convenient aftercare options available. Please contact Dr. Don Schiller today to schedule a consultation.
